Cigarettes and cigars are smoked by millions of people on a daily basis; this can leave a pile of cigarette ash and butts. Ash urns were invented in response to this issue. Another term used to describe ash urns is smoking urn used to identify these life saving receptacles. Discarding of cigarettes and cigars in a normal trash bin can create a fire hazard or major clean up project. Without ash urns people that smoke usually end up throwing their cigarette butt on the ground causing a pile up of trash in front of and around the building. This can lead to a tarnished image by visitors who may refuse to enter a facility with such sanitary issues. Many businesses all over the world place cigarette urns by their entrances and exits.
Ash urns are also heavily used in designated building smoking areas in conjunction with the Clean Indoor Air Act which prohibits smoking in most public areas and workplaces protecting the majority of citizens from tobacco smoke.
